Some people don't get the relic thing. They've probably never played one. I built one myself, and it feels like it's 50 years old! It just has that broken in feel! A bonus too...your don't have to worry about scratching them!👍😎🎸🎶
people listen with their eyes. a black finish has "dark " tone, vs. a white finish has more defined "clear" tone. not really, but! If you show a beat up guitar, then it sounds nice and "worn in". hahaha. Look, sometimes you can get the best jazz tone out of one of those Dimebag guitars for example, but if you show up to a gig with one of those, it'll not look right. Anyway: it's all a bunch of balloney. It's like yeah sneakers work the same as dress shoes, but showing up to an expensive dinner wearing sneakers looks wrong. Relic'ing does not do anything for the sound except make it look beat up and as as result it is perceived more "vintage"
My CS 63 Relic Strat is the best guitar that I have ever played the last 25 years. I don’t have to care for that guitar, it got abused and gigged. I bought her with a relic finish and now after lots of sessions and gigs, she is heavy reliced now. I was never into that relic thing, I didn’t understand it until I played my Relic Strat for the first time. I always wanted to keep my guitars pristine and shiny and that was the thing that did hold me back. Now I really enjoy being a maniac on stage etc. I would have never done that with a new and shiny guitar. Unleash the fury 🤘🏻 But yes, relic is not for everyone, play what you like and let others play what they like.
This video is good. But the explanation in 1:22 is bullshit. Relicing the guitar to enrich the tone of the guitar? So he implied that relic guitar sound richer than non-relic guitar. Aesthetic never had an impact on the tone. Except maybe the playability for example on the neck.
I agree but as someone who plays relic and non relic Strats, I can tell you that you simply play different on a relic guitar. It’s not the guitar that does sound different from relic, it’s you because the relic does change your playing/playing style. That could be either good or bad. It’s just up to yourself. Is it worth you spending that much more money, I don’t know. I got a really good deal on my 63 Custom Shop relic Strat and it was probably the best deal I have ever made. It’s my No.1 guitar.
I’ve been playing a 1993 ‘62 avri Strat every single day for over 20 years. I use it for everything from bedroom practice to gigs to recording sessions.. it still looks like a new guitar. Relic guitars are a crock and no guitar would ever look like that unless it was deliberately trashed with sandpaper and a hammer.
hank- i'm not sure you are comparing like with like here. the avri guitars have a totally different finish and are well known for not aging like a true vintage instrument. There is a thick poly undercoat and a thick nitro finish- unlike the thin nitro on vintage fenders. my strat has 61 years of wear and looks more worn than these examples by far. i have gigged a 2004 poly finish strat for 18 years and there is not a scratch on it
I can understand the interest for vintage guitars that have been unintentionally scratched by their player through the years. They tell a personal story. To fake such a past feels almost sacrilegious to me.
Yes it is damaging a guitar and has nothing to do with the sound. when you deliberately scuff up the paint to make it look old then you are holding a fraud.
@@TheEchelon I simply dont like the look thats all. Even an old guitar should look like it was loved and played. Not like it was left out in the rain for 15 years
But it has nothing to do with the sound, whether the finish on a guitar looks like new, or whether it looks artificial, as if someone had used the instrument as a racket. I don't get it...
Yes, I’m absolutely with you. But as someone who play’s reliced and non reliced Strats, I can tell you that it isn’t the guitar that’s changing the tone, it’s simply you. You just play different on a reliced guitar. That can be either good or bad. After 25 years of professional music, my 63 Custom Shop relic was the best deal I have ever made. I bought her used with a relic finish but she has more like a heavy relic finish now because she got abused and play so much over the years. This is just something that I couldn’t have accomplished with a brand new guitar. But yeah relic isn’t for everyone .
Sorry but if I am going to spend money on a brand new guitar than I want it looking brand spanking new! I wonder how many people would reject a used guitar if it half the damage these ones have!
The real truth of relic a guitar is simply to make believe people you are something that you are not. Its the same mind set as a phony navy seal or the infamous Charlie Zelenoff fake world champion in boxing. We saw the same thing in the late '80's, early '90's when a lot of amateur photographers sanded down their cameras to look "professional" which they, obviously, where not.
You get a guitar which feels more personal and like an old friend. A workhorse. Something you’re not scared to go to town on... and you’re not going to be able to achieve that look authentically. Firstly, unless you’re a full time musician, you simply won’t play enough. Not to mention that fact that most guitars now have polyurethane finishes which DO NOT wear. Also, you won’t be sweating on the guitar or covering it in smoke etc, like a guitar would have been if it were being played at bars and gigs back in the 70’s. It’s just not going to happen. Just let people enjoy their thing.
This episode was our favorite. No games, no sillyness, just straight up facts and little history of Fender and it’s custom shop.

I love relic.
The statement that relicing changes the tone of a guitar is at best questionable.
It doesn't change the actual sound but I'm pretty sure it helps conditioniong your mind so it feels more vintage to your ears

It changes the feel of the guitar which ultimately changes the way you play which in the end will change the sound you’re producing.
Julian Gonzalez ofcourse it changes the sounds. Everything on a guitar changes the sound. No matter if it’s a crack or a different pickguard.
Good point here! I believe that relicing makes just roll mo money into Fenders pockets... That's it! It's just imagination....
I think they are beautiful, especially color over color.

the toanwood can finally breathe when the finish is reliced. makes your maj7 chords sound fuller
And some people like that beat em up lookin crap and dont forget to add that to my bill. Ill drag it down a gravel rd for 1/2 mile ,,10buks any1?

I play them, collect them, cherish them...Nigel Tufnel 1982
I don't get relic....I try hard to keep my strat looking perfect, even though it's is played everyday
Stephen Kennedy to each its own! Relic has its appeal , we recommend to try one ✌️
If your nice guitar gets scratched up, it looses value. However, relic guitars are expensive. Makes no sense.
I love relics, especially if well done. A lot of people feel the same way I do or there wouldn't be so many of them produced.
There's a story behind any guitar. Yeah, a fake story.

Relic fingerboards look really bad in my opinion. Don't get it.
It depends, for me is beautiful.
I think best Fenders are called G&L ;)
Dainius Vyšniauskas Had both, im with ya on that 1.
How the heck can a messed up paintjob n a few scratches here and there change the tone? I don't get it... Just a hype.... Pffffff

Cringe factor is high.

The only dope there was pulling 12 hour long days I'm afraid. But don't worry I get that a lot ! // Guillaume
I bought a American HSS and it sounded terrible....was I unlucky? I sold it so I want to get a Ibanez AZ...
Fenders QC (excluding custom shop) and overall performance is much more hit and miss than anyone wants to admit.
Is that tony hawks son on the right?
Lame, just buy a new guitar and use it🤦♂️ nothing more original as your own journey with the instrument

0:30 this was awkward...
If you want to preserve your axe, you need to wax or apply ceramic to it...just liek a car!
Made up stories lol
Right..relic guitars, the whole idea is odd to me. You take a fine crafted instrument and trash it...freaks me out
Is this an Ali G episode...?
Sure...and i want a reliced new car wit scratches and rust and broken headlights...
Just no.
